Brief Introduction of Mechanical & Power Engineering College
The college originated from the undergraduate major in Hydraulic Engineering Machinery of Gezhouba Hydropower Engineering Institute in 1978. It obtained the Master’s admission qualification in Mechanical Design & Theory in 2001. In 2010, it was awarded the qualification for recruiting graduate students at the first-level discipline in Mechanical Engineering. In 2012, the discipline in Mechanical Engineering was approved as a key discipline of Hubei Province. In 2016, it was awarded the qualification for recruiting graduate students at the first-level discipline in Power Engineering and Engineering Thermophysics.
The college offers 6 undergraduate majors in Mechanical Design & Manufacture & Automation, Material Forming & Control Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical & Electrical Engineering, Energy & Power Engineering, Nuclear Engineering & Nuclear Technology. Among them, Mechanical Design & Manufacture & Automation is a major with national characteristics, and Material Forming & Control Engineering is an Excellent Engineers training Program major of Ministry of Education. The college has 2 Master's programs at first-level discipline, which are Mechanical Engineering and Power Engineering & Engineering Thermophysics, and 2 Professional Master programs, which are Mechanical Engineering and Control Engineering. Mechanical Engineering is the Doctoral program construction discipine of CTGU. The college sets up "Chutian Scholars Program" positions in 4 disciplines: Mechanical Manufacture & Automation, Mechanical Design and Theory, Mechanical & Electrical engineering, and Power Engineering & Engineering Thermophysics. It has 2 “Chutian Scholar” distinguished professors and 2 “Chutian Scholar” chair professors.
The college has 102 faculty members, including 18 professors, 40 associate professors, 70 doctors, 1 person who enjoys special government allowances from the State Council, and 2 persons who are young and middle-aged experts with outstanding contributions in Hubei Province, 1 double academician, 2 CTGU distinguished Professors, 2 “Three Gorges” scholars, 8 "151" academic leaders, 4 CTGU academic backbones, 9 Doctoral supervisors, 14 part-time professors, 2 part-time foreign professors.
The college has 5 research platforms , which are Provincial key Laboratory for the Design and Maintenance of Hydropower Machinery Equipment, Hubei Provincial R&D Center of new Hydraulic Pneumatic Technology & Product co-constructed by University and Enterprise, Hubei Provincial R&D Center of new Graphite Flame Retardant Material co-constructed by University and Enterprise, Provincial Key Laboratory (Preparation) of Robotics and Intelligent Systems, and Provincial Engineering Technology Center (Preparation) of Graphite-based Materials Additive Manufacturing. It also has 9 university-level scientific research institutions, including Mechanical Design Institute, Intelligent Machine and System Institute, Advanced Forming Technology and Equipment Institute, Digital Manufacturing Technology and Equipment Institute, Intelligent Simulation Optimization and Scheduling Institute, Institute of Tribology, Institute of Electromechanical Systems Diagnostics and Control, Institute of Nuclear Science and Technology, and Institute of Power Equipment. With reasonable professional title structure, education structure and age structure, as well as high level teaching and research ability, a united and cooperative teaching and scientific research team has been formed.
The college has 1,674 full-time undergraduates, 182 Postgraduates, and 6 international students. Up to now, more than 7,500 postgraduate and undergraduate students graduated from the college, who have been highly praised by the employers. Most graduates have become enterprise leaders and modern engineers in all kinds of fields, such as hydropower construction, energy construction, and machinery manufacturing. The primary employment rate of undergraduates always remains at around 95%, and the employment rate of postgraduates is 100%.
The college has many professional laboratories, such as Mechanical Innovation Laboratory, Mechanical Foundamental Laboratory, Mechanical & Electrical Engineering Laboratory,Industrial Engineering Laboratory, Energy & Power Laboratory, Nuclear Engineering & Nuclear Technology Laboratory, Material Forming Laboratory, etc. The laboratory construction area is more than 7,000 square meters, and the total value of equipment and instruments is more than 60 million yuan, of which more than 50 sets of equipment exceeds 100,000 yuan.
In recent years, the College has undertaken and participated in more than 60 projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation, more than 120 provincial level (ministerial) and municipal level (university) research projects, and more than 400 research projects commissioned and cooperated by enterprises. In the past three years, more than 500 academic papers has been published, including more than 200 articles in SCI, EI, and ISTP search publications, more than 10 academic monographs and textbooks has been published, and more than 700 patents has been granted. In the fields of Complex Mechanical Equipment Design & Theory, Additive Manufacturing Technology, Triction, Wear & Surface Engineering, New Energy Equipment Engineering, it has formed its own scientific research features, and has built a Mechanical Plus research system.
The college has conducted extensive international academic exchanges and cooperation and has established stable cooperative relationships with the Empire University (UK), the University of Southampton(UK), the University of Warwick(UK), the Centralesupelec University in France, the VALENCIENNES University in France, the University of Applied Sciences in Berlin, Kaiserslautern University of Applied Sciences in Germany, the Twenty University in Netherland, the University of Sydney, the Queensland University of Technology, the Advanced Manufacturing Research Center of School of Engineering of the Southern Methodist University(USA), and Kitakyushu International Exchange Center in Japan.
